The Book Thief: Discussion 2

In the chapter "Pages From the Basement", I thought it was very meaningful when Max wrote The Standover Man on pages from My Struggle. I thought this because My Struggle is about Hitler's life, and about how Germans should not mix with other races because they are "superior". But The Standover Man is about how a Jewish man becomes friends with a German girl, not letting what Hitler says stand in the way. It was almost like Max stamped out the horrible words of My Struggle and replaced it with something a lot happier and better.

  1. The Standover Man made me really have to think. Espically the end. I really thought hard about this. I couldn't believe, how much emotion, could be put in how many pages? 13? If I was Max, and I had to write that, I would swell with so much emotion, that I wouldn't be able to finish it. I honor Max even more then I did before, just for writing The Standover Man.

  2. I strongly respect Max for almost watching over Liesel to write such an emotional book about their relationship rather than letting what Hitler says be engraved in her mind. I love how Max, a Jew, used the best of what he could do although he knew it wasn't the best thing in the world he made a beautiful book for Liesel. It may not look the best but it really is...
